Ms. Katie is returning for her 19th year as Camp Manager at Theatre of the Imagination for our Summer Camp near Overland Park, KS. Our acting classes for kids would not be the same without her unique talents. She has a strong love of kids and theater, and she always lights up the room with her warm smile and never-ending talent.

What brought you to Theater of the Imagination in the first place?

“I was a sophomore in high school, looking for a summer teaching job. I was so happy to get hired and start teaching my first class. My kids loved playing improv games where they could make up crazy characters. We spent so much of the day laughing that I knew I was in the right place.”

How did teaching at TI help you in other endeavors?

“For over ten years, I have been teaching middle school drama in Harrisonville. My years at TI got me ready for all of the drama that 13-year-olds bring (and believe me, they have a lot of drama!). I am thankful for my experience as a summer camp teacher and manager for helping share my love of theater with kids.”

What makes Theatre of the Imagination different from other camps?

“Our staff at our Summer Camp near Overland Park are all dedicated to our kids. We work so hard to make sure that no one feels left out. Some kids come to camp ready to take the stage, while others need more time to get comfortable and confident. All of our teachers go the extra mile to give kids that confidence.”

What are you most looking forward to for this summer?

“Seeing all those smiling faces! There is nothing as fulfilling as watching your students get up on stage and shine. I can’t wait!”

What do you say to parents looking for drama classes near them?

“I tell them if you want great drama classes near you, Theatre of the Imagination is the first place you should visit. Our acting classes for kids let your child explore their dramatic side, having fun the whole time. We offer some of the finest drama classes near you.”

What does theater teach kids?

“Theatre teaches children discipline and expression. Through acting, they can work out their own emotional life. As adults, we often bury our true emotions away. But kids live their lives with their hearts on their sleeves. Acting classes teach them to deal with those feelings in a constructive way. They can play-act feeling happy, mad, sad, crazy, all in the span of a short time. They get to interact with others, making friends along the way. The skills that theater teaches are invaluable. Theater kids are not afraid to raise their hand in class and ask the teacher a question. Theater kids will seek out the truth in any situation without hesitation. This sort of bravery can give any child a much better chance at succeeding in high school, college, and beyond.”
